Paul Fleischman constantly explores new territory in his multi-voiced novels, poems, and plays, his works for readers' theater, for string troupes, for every form of creative expression. Zap, his new play written for high schools, has been performed in three states, and will be published by Candlewick in the fall of 2005. For more on Zap go to www.paulfleischman.net, and watch here for an excerpt.

At Holt, I created EDGE – an imprint devoted to border-crossing YA fiction and nonfiction – we pioneered in capturing the voices of Americas new immigrants; of multiracial teenagers – and of America's true history of racial mixing; in books about Latino/Hispanic America; in the voices of the new Asian-Americans, and in publishing poetry for teenagers.

I learned a great deal from Liz Rosenberg who reinvented the YA poetry anthology, and not just about poetry.

I fell in love with Kyoko Mori's writing, and may yet get to publisher her again. A basic bio of Kyoko is at eduplace.com.

I was also fortune to be able to publish Judd Winick's award-winning graphic novel memoir, Pedro and Me. For more on Judd and Pedro see his excellent website is www.frumpy.com.

Nikki Giovanni and I formed a wonderful editorial relationship at Holt that still continues. See her cool site at nikki-giovanni.com.

Someday I'll find another project for that master of understated wit and invention – Chris Raschka. For a taste of Chris go to www.rif.org.

Nina Jaffe and Steve Zeitlin created a mini-series of wonderful stories with questions in them that I hope kids will keep asking for years to come.

Norma Howe's intelligence and irrepressible wit followed me from Holt to Carus, and I hope we'll find a new expression for it. Norma's site gives a sense of her sparkling imagination.

Speaking of sharp wit with dark undertones – that is Ruth Pennebaker, another author I can't wait to publish again. The tone of her site, is the voice of her novels.

In his very different way, Jim Heynen shares this same spirit as you can see at jimheynen.com. You can't do better than being smart, funny, and unafraid, as all three of them are.

I love nonfiction, as an editor as much as an author, and in Pearl Gaskins, Joyce Hansen, and Gary McGowan, Steven Jaffe, Gary Nash, Joe Horowitz, Susan Kuklin, Jeff Kisseloff, Jacob Boas, I've found authors who share that passion. Maricel Presilla, though, takes pride of place, as her three nonfiction picture books have mutated into Zafra and Cucharamama, two restaurants where I love to eat. She even cooked the meal my wife and I ate the night before our wedding. Click for a bit about Maricel.

My wife, Marina Budhos, wrote Remix for me – the book on immigrant teenagers I mentioned earlier. Check out her neat site at marinabudhos.com.

At Carus, we published 911: The Book of Help, and while it was not a perfect book, perhaps, even, a book we as adults needed as much as did teenagers, I was very grateful to everyone who participated. After the attacks, we all had to speak in whatever way we could, and maybe that did make it easier for some teenagers to do the same.

Carus won the Batchelder when I was there, as did Holt during my tenure. Getting to know translators such as Michael Heim, Elizabeth Crawford, and Jim Skofield, has been a treat, and I hope to publish more books in translation again.

This gives some idea of who I am as an editor – until the next new book comes along.
